BK 06 — Codes of Honor

Phase 1 — Foundations of Breaking

Breaking has no single rulebook that tells you how to earn respect. But the culture carries values that have been passed from one generation to the next: originality, courage, knowledge, community, and respect for the people sharing the floor.

These codes show up in what you do. Give credit to the people you learn from. Develop your own style instead of copying someone else’s. Listen to the music, respect the cypher, and take responsibility for how you treat other dancers—whether you win or lose.

Breaking can create opportunities, including paid work and public recognition. The question is not whether you accept them, but how you carry the culture with you when you do. An opportunity means more when it also supports the people and communities that helped make it possible.

Codes of honor stay alive through everyday choices, not slogans. They are something each generation learns, questions, and puts into practice.

Reflection: What values guide you when nobody is watching?
