BK 09 — Who Owns Breaking?

Phase 1 — Foundations of Breaking

Breaking has roots in the Bronx, shaped by Black and Puerto Rican communities and the wider culture of hip-hop. Today it reaches across the world, but its global growth does not erase where it began.

No dancer, brand, event, or institution can claim the whole culture as its own. Everyone who participates can help shape its future—and has a responsibility to understand its history, respect its communities, and share its knowledge without separating it from its roots.

Ownership is not simply about possession. It is about how you care for something you have received and what you pass on to others.

Reflection: What responsibility do you carry as part of breaking?
