BK 17 — Storytelling in Moves
Phase 2 — Culture & Practice
A breaking round can communicate more than technique. Through rhythm, direction, texture, expression, and movement choices, a dancer can create tension, surprise, humor, struggle, or release.
Storytelling does not require acting out a literal narrative. It can emerge through the way a round begins, develops, and ends. Even a familiar move can carry personal meaning when it is connected to intention and experience.
Powerful storytelling helps the audience feel something, but it must first be honest to the dancer. When movement carries identity and purpose, a round becomes more than a collection of impressive moments.
Reflection: What are your movements communicating when you cannot use words?
