ALPHABCZ ESSAY
WHAT ARE WE ACTUALLY JUDGING?
Connected to BK34 — Rules vs. Improvisation
Breaking has evolved through competition, and with that evolution came judging systems designed to evaluate performance through criteria such as execution, difficulty, technique and musicality.
But can a breaking battle ever be fully understood through numbers?
Drawing from 18 years of personal experience within the culture, AlphaBCZ explores the relationship between technical evaluation and human interpretation.
A battle is more than two dancers demonstrating their abilities. It is an exchange built on improvisation, response, pressure, character and connection. Every movement exists within a conversation between the people facing each other.
Judging systems can provide structure and consistency, but they cannot completely remove the human element from an art form rooted in individual expression.
This essay does not seek to dismiss judging criteria or establish a definitive way to evaluate breaking. Instead, it questions whether the qualities that determine a meaningful battle can always be separated, measured and compared.
Because being technically stronger does not necessarily mean being stronger in the exchange.
Connected to Breaking Knowledge 34 — Rules vs. Improvisation, this first extended essay invites the breaking community to reflect on the relationship between structure and freedom, objectivity and interpretation, and technical excellence and the art of battling.
The question remains: Are we judging the movements, or are we judging the battle?
