BK 12 — Respect the Music
Phase 2 — Culture & Practice
Music is not background decoration for breaking. It is an active partner connecting the DJ, the dancer, the cypher, and everyone experiencing the moment.
Respecting the music means listening before reacting. It requires patience, awareness, and a willingness to let the track influence your round. Sometimes the music asks for power; sometimes it asks for restraint, playfulness, or silence.
It also means recognizing the people and traditions behind the sounds you dance to. When breakers build a deeper relationship with the music, their movements begin to communicate instead of simply demonstrating ability.
Reflection: Are you using the music to display your moves—or building a conversation with it?
