BK 13 — Underground vs. Mainstream

Phase 2 — Culture & Practice

The underground and mainstream offer different environments for breaking. Underground spaces often protect experimentation, direct exchange, and community connection. Mainstream platforms can bring wider audiences, professional opportunities, and resources.

Neither space is automatically authentic or harmful. Underground scenes can also become exclusive, while mainstream platforms can create meaningful opportunities. What matters is how each environment influences the culture, the dancer, and the choices being made.

A breaker can move between both worlds without losing their identity, but doing so requires awareness. Visibility may change how breaking is presented, judged, and consumed. Growth becomes valuable when it does not erase the roots and relationships that made it possible.

Reflection: Does the platform shape your expression—or can you bring your values to every stage?
